· Summary: This is one of my favorite books in my library. It is little known in America as it wasn’t translated into English until 2004 but it is fantastic. I discovered it when searching for a good orchestration book that understands the needs and idiosyncrasies of the modern orchestra. Few books exist from the 20th century (at least worthwhile ones.) I brought this books to my friend and colleague Dr. BJ Brooks at WTAMU head of composition and it became one of his favorite books too. This book is very useful if you are trying to figure out what a contemporary musician can do and what techniques are possible. If you are going to write a piece of music for any combination of musical instrument this book would be a great asset.
· Personal Comments:
As I said… I love this book! It has small sections of music and full orchestral scores with commentary on proper use and instrumentation. This book also takes a large number of instruments and shows how best to take advantage of different sounds and how to score them.
· Suggested Use in Classroom: This would be used in later lessons when talking about instrumentation. Most other books in this genre are old and out-dated. This book is contemporary and great.
