· Summary: This book contains nearly 200 complete works in logical order. They are edited to be easy to read and analyze. 500 years of music is represented and would be ideal for form analysis, harmonic analysis, and ear training. Before each example a few questions are posed about the piece and it tell you what to look for.
· Personal Comments: This is kind of a difficult book to talk about but would be essential to a theory class. 99% of this book is just a collection of representative music laid out for analysis… the author is only present in the piece selections and the forwards to each piece. I could teach a very effective theory class for a whole year with nothing but my own knowledge and this book if I wanted to.
· Suggested Use in Classroom: Photocopies to hand out for assignments would be its most useful feature. It is helpful to show that theory isn’t just academic but it applies to real music. This book and others like it make it easier for the teacher to focus on lesson plans and not spend so much time looking for appropriate literature.
